If your doctor mentioned a disc problem and you left the appointment still unsure what it means for your back, you are not alone. At Chiropractic Works, we explain these terms to patients every week because the language doctors use can blur together in ways that do not help you understand your own situation.

The words used for back trouble can blur together. Herniated, bulging, degenerative, sciatica. They describe different things, and knowing which is which helps you understand your own back.

Start with the disc itself. Between each pair of vertebrae sits a disc: a tough outer ring around a soft, gel-like center. Its job is to cushion your spine and absorb the shock of every step. Most of a healthy disc is water, which is part of how it stays springy.

Bulging disc. The disc spreads past its normal edge, a little like a tire that has lost some of its shape. It can crowd the space where a nerve sits.

Herniated disc. The soft center pushes through a crack in the outer ring and presses on a nearby nerve. That contact is often what turns a quiet back problem into sharp, specific pain.

Degenerative disc disease. Over the years, discs lose height and water content, so they cushion less than they once did. The name sounds alarming, though it describes a common part of aging spines.

Sciatica. This one is a symptom, not a disc problem on its own. When a disc or bone presses on the sciatic nerve in your lower back, pain shoots down through the hip and leg. People often feel it more in the leg than the back.

One thread runs through all four: a disc under pressure, and a nerve that pays the price. That is why so much back and leg pain traces back to the discs, even when it shows up far from your spine.

Non-surgical spinal decompression aims at that root. The DRX9000 is FDA-cleared to help with these disc-related problems by easing pressure off the disc so the nerve has room to settle. Whether it fits your case depends on your exam, since not every back is a candidate.
