Non-Surgical Herniated Disc Treatment: What Spinal Decompression Actually Does

When people hear "herniated disk," they usually picture two outcomes: live with the pain, or get surgery.
There's a third option that most people don't know exists. And it doesn't involve a scalpel.
Spinal decompression therapy works by gently creating negative pressure inside the disk. When a disk herniates, the inner nucleus pushes through a weakened outer layer and presses against surrounding nerves. That pressure is what causes the shooting pain, the numbness, the weakness down the leg or arm.
Decompression slowly and precisely stretches the spine in a way that reverses that pressure. The goal is to create a pulling effect that encourages the displaced disk material to retract and allows nutrient-rich fluid to flow back into the disk.

Here's what a typical 6-week protocol looks like:
Weeks 1 and 2
Sessions are shorter, around 15 to 20 minutes on the decompression table. The machine is calibrated specifically for your weight and the level of disk involvement. Most patients feel relief during the session itself, even if they're skeptical going in. Some feel mild soreness afterward, similar to a workout, as the tissue starts responding.
Weeks 3 and 4
This is usually where the shift happens. The acute flare-ups start spacing out. Patients who came in barely able to sit start reporting longer windows of comfortable movement. The decompression sessions are paired with adjunct care, whether that's chiropractic adjustment, therapeutic massage, or targeted stretching, to support the structural changes happening in the disk.
Weeks 5 and 6
Most patients in this stage are measuring progress in what they can do again, not just in pain levels. Walking longer distances. Sleeping through the night. Getting back to activities that were off the table for months. The final sessions focus on holding the gains and transitioning to maintenance.
This is not a magic solution and it doesn't work for every case. There are patients who are not candidates, and we'll tell you that clearly if you're one of them. But for the right presentation, non-surgical decompression is one of the most powerful tools in conservative spine care. It's also one of the most requested services at our Oak Park clinic, especially from patients who've already been told surgery is their only option.
The surgery conversation can wait. Let's see what's possible first.
