Spinal decompression is one of the services we get the most questions about at our Chiropractic Works and the questions usually come from one of two directions: people who have heard it works miracles, and people who have been told surgery is their only option and never heard otherwise. Both deserve a straight answer.

Spinal decompression gets talked about in extremes. Some people treat it as a miracle. Others assume any serious disc problem means surgery. Both miss the mark, so here are a few common myths worth clearing up.

Myth: surgery is the only way to fix a disc. Many disc problems respond to non-surgical care. Decompression, physical therapy, and time help a lot of people avoid the operating room. Surgery has its place, but it is rarely the only door.

Myth: if your back hurts, something is badly damaged. Most back pain is not a structural emergency. Pain is a signal, and a loud signal does not always mean serious harm. A proper exam sorts out what is actually going on.

Myth: you just have to live with it. Most people have more options than they realize. Arranging your whole week to protect your back is not the only path.

Myth: decompression is a quick, one-time fix. It works as a planned series over several weeks, the way most real recovery does. Anyone promising an instant cure is overselling.

So who is a good candidate? Decompression tends to help most with disc-related pain: herniated discs, bulging discs, sciatica, and degenerative discs. The DRX9000 is FDA-cleared for those conditions.

Who is not a candidate? Some conditions make it the wrong choice, including certain bone conditions, past spinal surgery in some cases, and pregnancy, among others. This is not a machine we put everyone on. We screen every patient first, and sometimes the honest answer is that decompression is not for you. When that happens, we say so and help you find the care that fits. For a plain breakdown of the disc conditions this approach addresses most often, our post on herniated, bulging, and degenerative disc problems covers each one clearly: https://www.chiropracticworksforyou.com/post/non-surgical-herniated-disc-treatment-spinal-decompression

That honesty is the point of the first visit. You get an exam, a real look at your history, and a straight answer about whether this could help.
